Aside from the fact that I am a huge Mad Men fan (and I am sad that the season finale is back, but luckily, AMC renewed it for another season. Woo-hoo!), this skit on yesterday’s SNL was so funny. If you watch Mad Men, you’ll get it:

Is it me or am I the only one looking forward to the holidays. Sure, the economy is glum, the future is bleak and most experts say that the holidays are when most people are most depressed (see the Mayo Clinic Article or WebMD Article for more information). Combine this with the consumerism and megalomania and the holiday season can appear to some as one big sham.
However, unlike those people, I actually enjoy the holidays. Halloween. Kids in costumes. Trick-or-Treating. Halloween candy. Thanksgiving. Time with family. Time with friends. Good food. Turkey, cranberry sauce, yams and all of the related fixings. Christmas. Gift giving. Hanukkah (for my Jewish friends). Seeing family. Eggnog with nutmeg. And yes, going to church (I truly believe that Christmas and Easter is when all of the heathens come out and actually go to services).
So, I don’t know about y’all, but I am upbeat about the holidays. It’s a welcome distraction from work, the stresses of life and gives something to look forward to.

So is it me or has our society gone down a path of decay where we’ve reached the point of no return? No, I am not talking about our financial markets (although I’ll talk about that in a separate post). I am talking about common courtesy to our fellow man/woman.
Call me old fashioned, but I feel like nobody should have to ask you to hold open a door or to help someone in need. Perhaps we’ve become a less interventionist society? Perhaps. I mean, I can totally relate. It used to be sixty or so years ago, you could hitchhike and it was totally acceptable. Now, with the psycho killers and crazy people out there, that is not a safe thing to do these days.
Even when you see someone whose car has broken down on the highway, your conscience might tell you to stop, but your mind tells you to keep driving. Because you never know if it might be a ploy — they could rob or stab or kill you.
I guess it all comes from a lack of trust in mankind. Where did we get lost as a society?
Take a look at this — a man got run over by a car in Hartford, Connecticut and nobody came to help him. It got a lot of wide attention in the national media:
Makes you think, doesn’t it?
